Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital and Highland Park Hospital (all owned by Evanston Northwestern Healthcare) may have illegally conspired to artificially inflate cost of healthcare services in and around Chicago, Illinois.
Investigation and pending class action lawsuit in Chicago against Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Corporation's three hospitals: Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital and Highland Park Hospital. The class action complaint alleges that Evanston Northwestern engaged in unlawful anticompetitive conduct for healthcare services in the geographic triangle formed by Evanston Northwestern's three wholly-owned hospitals, Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, and Highland Park Hospital. Because of Evanston Northwestern's unlawful conduct, as alleged in the class action complaint, patients, insurers, and other third party payors paid artificially inflated prices for healthcare services at those hospitals. The Complaint seeks treble damages and injunctive relief from Evanston Northwestern. The Federal Trade Commission unanimously found, on August 6, 2007 that Evanston Northwestern's January 2000 acquisition of Highland Park Hospital violated the federal antitrust laws and further concluded that that acquisition enabled Evanston Northwestern to improperly exercise its market power to charge anticompetitive prices for medical services.
