Invetigation and pending class action lawsuit against Toyota by owners and lessees of Toyota FJ Cruisers throughout the United States, and owners and lessees of Scion xBs (which is also built and sold by Toyota) in California, whose windshields have cracked and pitted under circumstances that would not normally result in a problem.
Owners have reported that the FJ Cruiser and Scion Xbs' windshields are extremely fragile, cracking when small pebbles come into contact with it, and pitting extraordinarily easily. The evidence indicates that Toyota knew that this problem existed before selling these vehicles, but sold them anyway without advising prospective buyers about the defect that causes it. Because the windshield glass is an integral part of the roof structure, a crack can severely weaken the ability of the vehicle's roof to withstand crushing in the event of a roll-over. And the problem is, of course, even more disconcerting in a sport utility vehicle, which are known to be more prone to rolling over than other vehicles.
